Parade of stars to contest Audi Cup in Munich

03.03.2009

A huge treat lies in store for Bayern fans on 29 and 30 July this summer with the inaugural Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena. The premium-quality field for the two-day tournament comprises hosts Bayern Munich, Champions League holders Manchester United, leading Italian outfit AC Milan, and reigning Argentine champions Boca Juniors.

The action starts on 29 July with the semi-finals, the draw for which was made on Tuesday on the Audi stand at the Geneva Motor Show. Bayern will meet the star-studded Milan ensemble featuring Brazil aces Kaka and Ronaldinho, while World Player of the Year Christiano Ronaldo and former Bayern man Owen Hargreaves feature for United against Boca Juniors, Diego Maradona’s former club. The final matches will take place on 30 July. Kick-off times will be confirmed at a later date.

Sagnol on official duty

The draw was conducted by Audi works driver and passionate football fan Tom Kristensen, an eight-time winner at Le Mans. Players and officials of the four clubs were also in attendance: Gennaro Gattuso of AC Milan, Wes Brown of Manchester United, Boca Juniors Chief Executive Carlos Bianchi, and Willy Sagnol from FCB.

The tournament marks the centenary year of Bayern Premium Partner Audi. “We’re proud we’ve succeeded in attracting these four top clubs to Munich for the Audi Cup. The tournament will be a sporting highlight as part of the programme celebrating the Audi marque’s 100th birthday,” commented chairman of the Audi AG board Rupert Stadler.
