The first home match of the new season was a cracker, as Bayern thrashed VfB Stuttgart 6–1, Bastian Schweinsteiger scored on his comeback in the starting line-up, and late sub Javi Martinez enjoyed a winning debut. Boss Jupp Heynckes felt his side were “too passive" in the first 20 minutes, “but after that, we played outstanding football." Schweinsteiger praised the team’s “potential, quality and hunger."
Reaction to Bayern v Stuttgart:
Jupp Heynckes: “We were too passive in the first 20 minutes and lacked the aggression you need. But my team woke up after going 1–0 down, and reacted in the way we want them to. After that, we played outstanding football. You could see the players enjoying it. Above all else, you could see a united team with total harmony. I'm delighted about winning 6-1, but even more about the impression I’m getting form the team in our daily work.”
Bastian Schweinsteiger: “We reacted very well to going a goal behind. In the recent past we've not managed to recover from going 1–0 down, but today we did just that really impressively. I see potential, quality and a certain hunger in this team.”
Javi Martínez: “I'm very satisfied, and happy about this big win in this fantastic setting. The people here have welcomed me with open arms.”
Bruno Labbadia (VfB coach): “We began very, very well and scored the first goal, but after that we simply made too many basic errors. And Munich are top quality, they'll always take their chances. This is a bitter defeat for us.”
Sven Ulreich (VfB): “We basically started well and did what we set out to do. But then we completely lost the plot. We made mistakes when we were going forward, which encouraged Bayern and led to their goals. It's very bitter. We'll work our way through it, pick ourselves up and make sure people see a very different VfB.”
Martin Harnik (VfB): “We played really well until conceding the first goal. But then we simply fell apart and played into Bayern's hands. That was a real humiliation today.”
